With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, homeowners will begin traveling to pumpkin patches and tree farms for that perfect pumpkin, wreath, or Christmas tree to go along with hay bales, pinecones and colorful leaf decorations. During this time it is important to remember that any natural outdoor item converted to an indoor or porch decoration could contain unwanted pests that could lead to an infestation if ignored.
Although bringing pests into your home via decoration is possible, it is easily avoidable if you follow these three simple steps:
- Inspect– All decorations should be inspected for live insects, webs, egg sacs or bore holes BEFORE bringing them into your car or home.
- Clean– BEFORE taking items inside vigorously shake all trees, wreaths, pinecones and leaves. Prune all limbs or leaves with spider webs or egg sacs. Remove any bird nests as they often contain mites or lice. Wipe down pumpkins, gourds, or solitary leaves.
- Monitor– While warm homes without a food or water source do not provide a good environment for pests to thrive, keep an eye on decorations for any signs of life after they have been placed in the home. Vacuum up any pests found, as pesticides are not an option because they are often flammable. If an infestation is discovered, call your pest control company immediately.
